Well friends, this newsletter is understandably scarce in summer. But now that we’re back to losing daylight, here’s my friendly reminder that 2023 is already half over. I don’t know about you, but with each passing year the months of the calendar flip on by faster, like pages in a good book.
The distance between June and December tightens. And before we know it we’ll be either sliding on new fallen snowflakes or pining for them. If you’re already missing the apun/aputi (Inuit root word for snow on the ground) I hear you can still visit last season’s remnants on the ridge at Eaglecrest Ski Area.
After an interminably chilly late Spring, a day in the high seventies without a cloud in the sky (also known as Summer) hit the week of June 2lst. My dad, daughter and I celebrated the official start of ice cream season with a Douglas Island to Out the Road trip. Destination: Jensen-Olson Arboretum.
The irises are on and the poppies and peonies are finally popping. If the return of grey has got you down, a walk along what we dubbed rhododendron row is highly recommended!

This mid-year missive also gives me the chance to tell you that Katie B’s Ski Newsletter was honored this Spring with an Alaska Press Club award in the category of Best Sports or Outdoors Column. We squeezed onto the podium in 3rd Place. Thanks for your support of my ski season project, and spreading the word as it were!
Hope to see you on the trail or the paddle board soon. Or closer to the next Solstice!
Cheers,
Katie B.
The photos were beautiful (I haven't made it out to the Arboretum lately) and your encouragement as the days get shorter is appreciated. Congratulations on the award. Well deserved.
